In the heart of Malaysia, the historic city of Melaka is preparing for a significant event. Today, Chinese actress Fan Bingbing will be conferred the title of Datuk Kehormat (Honorary Datuk) in recognition of her contributions to boosting Melaka's profile as a global tourism destination.
A total of 474 recipients, including Fan Bingbing, will be honoured at the investiture ceremony taking place at Seri Negeri, Ayer Keroh. The event is being held in conjunction with the birthday of Melaka Yang di-Pertua Negeri Tun Dr Mohd Ali Rustam.
Fan Bingbing, known for her roles in films such as X-Men: Days of Future Past and I Am Not Madame Bovary, has been instrumental in increasing tourist arrivals from China. Her promotional efforts have seen Chinese tourist arrivals to Melaka surge from 204,818 in 2023 to 664,687 in 2024.
The actress has also helped generate over 1.5 billion impressions for Melaka on WeChat, China's largest social media platform. This significant digital reach has introduced Melaka to the world, particularly in China, and is seen as a major boost to Melaka's international appeal.
Fan Bingbing's appointment as Melaka's Tourism Friendship Ambassador in May 2024 marked the beginning of her journey in promoting the city. Prior to the investiture ceremony, she held a product launch at a Kuala Lumpur mall.
Fan Bingbing joins the ranks of Datuk Shah Rukh Khan and Datuk Jackie Chan, who were previously honoured by Malaysia for promoting tourism. Her recognition is a testament to Melaka's ongoing efforts to position itself as a key cultural and tourist hub.
Following the investiture ceremony, Fan Bingbing is expected to attend other state events in Melaka, further cementing her role as a cultural ambassador for the city.
