Motorway 66 incident leads to driver's injury and extensive damage - ongoing bridge rail repairs following the mishap
A serious traffic accident occurred on the A66 motorway between Steinau and Schlüchtern-Süd junctions at around 13:40, according to initial reports from Police Headquarters Southeast Hesse. The accident involved a 911 Carrera, driven by a 59-year-old man from the Aschaffenburg area.
The car lost control on the motorway bridge for unknown reasons and scraped along the central reservation for several meters before colliding with the right-hand reservation barrier and a bridge parapet. The impact was so severe that it caused the bridge parapet to be torn from its moorings and fall onto the L3179 road below in parts. Other parts of the bridge parapet were left hanging from the bridge.
The man was seriously injured in the accident and was taken to the hospital. The investigator conducting the investigations into the traffic accident on the A66 near Steinau an der Straße has not been publicly named.
The Porsche, involved in the accident, is estimated to be a total loss, with an estimated damage of around 200,000 euros. Repairs to the central reservation barrier and bridge parapet are ongoing, and they are expected to be completed by the end of the day.
The accident caused a long tailback on the motorway as traffic was diverted onto the left-hand lane, and the motorway and the road had to be partially and fully closed respectively during the cleanup operation.
