Motorway A5 Incident: Collision Involving Sheep Near Efringen Church
On the morning of August 16, 2025, a 57-year-old VW driver was involved in a collision with several sheep on the A5 highway near Freiburg. The incident occurred between the Efringen-Kirchen junction and the Neuenburg interchange, causing a significant disruption and resulting in the death of four sheep, one severely injured sheep, and estimated material damage of at least 20,000 euros.
The driver, who sustained minor injuries, was taken to a hospital by ambulance. Alongside the police and the ambulance service, the volunteer fire brigade and the highway maintenance department were present at the scene. The VW vehicle had to be towed away.
The Freiburg Police Headquarters is the authority investigating how the animals got onto the A5 highway. The Freiburg Traffic Police have initiated investigations to determine the circumstances surrounding the incident.
