Movie-goers bid farewell to esteemed director Butusov during a memorial screening
Yuri Butusov, a celebrated director who made a significant impact on Russian theater, passed away on August 9 at the age of 63. His body was cremated, and his ashes were brought to Moscow for a farewell ceremony at the Moscow Pushkin Drama Theater.
Born in 1961 in Gatchina, Leningrad Oblast, Butusov graduated from the director's faculty of the Saint Petersburg State Academy of Theater Arts in 1996. His career spanned over three decades, during which he directed numerous critically acclaimed productions.
Fans and admirers have gathered outside the theater to pay their respects to the late director. A makeshift memorial has appeared at the theater entrance, with fans bringing flowers, photographs, lighting candles, and leaving chalk messages. The main stage is adorned with set pieces from Butusov's productions, serving as a poignant reminder of his contributions to the world of theater.
The farewell ceremony includes displays of a portrait of the director and rehearsal videos in the theater's foyer. Leading theater companies across the country, including the Moscow Art Theatre, the Saint Petersburg Academic Theatre named after Lensoviet, the State Academic Theatre named after Yevgeny Vakhtangov, and the "Studio of Theatrical Art" Theatre, have sent wreaths as a sign of respect for Butusov.
