Movie on Gaza, crafted by Brad Pitt, gains focus in media world
In the heart of the Venice Film Festival, a storm of controversy is brewing around the premiere of "The Voice of Hind Rajab", a documentary drama co-produced by Brad Pitt and Joaquin Phoenix. The film, directed by Tunisian director Kaouther Ben Hania, is scheduled to premiere on Wednesday.
The film is based on the tragic story of a Palestinian girl named Hind Rajab who was killed in the Gaza Strip in January 2024 during her family's attempt to flee the city. The documentary suggests that Hind and parts of her family were killed by Israeli forces, a claim that Israel vehemently denies.
The Israeli military has stated that there were no troops in the area at the time of the incident, and they describe their actions during the Gaza conflict as self-defense following a Hamas terror attack that initiated the conflict on October 7, 2023.
Director Julian Schnabel chose Gal Gadot and Gerard Butler for their acting performances in "In The Hand of Dante", but Butler's presence at the premiere is uncertain due to protests against his and Gadot's presence. Gadot, who served in the Israeli military, had expressed solidarity with Israeli victims after the Hamas terror attack.
The connection to Hind was lost, and she was later found dead along with her family and the paramedics, 12 days later. The high number of civilian casualties in the Gaza conflict is internationally criticized, with around 1,200 people reportedly killed in Israel, and over 250 others kidnapped in the Gaza Strip, including children.
The film team expressed condolences for Hind Rajab and made a political appeal during the press conference, accusing Israel of committing genocide against Palestinians in the Gaza Strip. Israel and the German government reject the genocide accusation.
Tragically, the rescuers, who were on their way after hours of coordination, were reportedly killed themselves. The documentary features a central element, a phone recording that is said to be genuine, featuring Hind pleading for help while trapped in a shot-up car with dead family members.
The premiere of "The Voice of Hind Rajab" at the Venice Film Festival 2023 promises to be a poignant and powerful event, shedding light on a tragic chapter in the ongoing conflict between Israel and Palestine. Despite the controversy, the film is part of the competition at the festival, and it is expected to spark important discussions about peace, justice, and human rights.
