The Association of Berlin-Brandenburg Housing Companies (BBU) has announced a new initiative aimed at reallocating larger apartments to households in need of more space. This move is set to benefit tenants who have experienced changes in their living circumstances, as well as the city of Berlin.

According to data from the Berlin-Brandenburg Statistical Office, approximately half of the city's nearly 1.9 million households were single households in 2022, with nearly one in seven single households living in accommodations of at least 80 square meters. This initiative targets these tenants who no longer require larger living spaces.

The apartment swap will occur within the portfolio of the respective housing company, not between the seven companies. Each alternative apartment offered to tenants must be at least one room and ten square meters smaller than the current one. The new apartment offered will be at the local comparative rent without incurring any new tenant surcharge.

Support is offered in the form of up to three alternative apartment options within a year. The move is coordinated to avoid any double burden, ensuring a smooth transition for affected tenants.

Berlin's Senator for Urban Development, Christian Gaebler (SPD), stated that the offer aims to ensure that apartments better match the living situations of people. The initiative is designed to benefit both the tenants and the city of Berlin by optimising the use of available housing stock.

It's worth noting that the search results do not provide specific information on which of the seven state-owned housing companies in Berlin have recently freed up the most apartments with a size of at least 80 square meters. The initiative is not applicable to apartments between the seven housing companies.

This initiative comes as a step towards addressing the housing needs of Berlin's residents and improving the city's overall living conditions. The Freed-up larger apartments can be allocated to households that urgently need more space, making a positive impact on the city's housing market.
