MP Congress Leader Declares Adivasis Are Not Hindus

In a surprising turn of events, the Congress Legislature Party leader, Umang Singhar, has stirred up a political storm in Madhya Pradesh. During a tribal development council meeting in Chhindwara, Singhar, a four-time MLA and a veteran tribal leader, claimed that he and other tribals are not Hindus.

Singhar's statement, while intended to emphasize the need for recognition of the tribals' identity, culture, and heritage, has been met with strong criticism from various quarters. Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Mohan Yadav accused the Congress of trying to divide Hindu society, while BJP's Madhya Pradesh unit secretary Rajneesh Agrawal accused the Congress of attempting to separate tribals from Hindu society.

The Congress leader's remarks come at a time when he is advocating for constitutional amendments to grant greater political autonomy to Adivasis. He believes that provisions like the Fifth Schedule and the Panchayats (Extension to Scheduled Areas) Act could be instrumental in achieving this goal.

However, Singhar has criticized the BJP and RSS for pursuing a design to assimilate tribals into Hinduism. He claims that this has weakened the political autonomy of the tribals. Singhar also took pride in his tribal identity, citing Shabari, a tribal woman from Hindu mythology, who fed leftovers to Lord Rama.

Agrawal, on the other hand, sees a pattern in the Congress's actions as an attempt to divide society, influenced by Left liberals. He also claimed that the Congress first brought a law to stop religious conversions in the 1960s, but is now trying to separate tribals from the Hindu fold under the influence of the Tukde Tukde gang.

Meanwhile, the Chhattisgarh Pradesh Congress Committee (CPCC) president, Deepak Baij, maintains Singhar's view that tribals are not Hindus.

Elsewhere in the region, a gun exchange continued in Dantewada, and the body of a Naxal was recovered. This fact, while not directly related to the political row, was mentioned in the same paragraph.
