Multiple fatalities in crash on A3 highway close to Frankfurt.
In a shocking turn of events, an accident involving nine vehicles occurred on the A3 highway between Offenbach and Frankfurt-South on Sunday. The incident, which involved vehicles travelling towards Cologne, has claimed the lives of three individuals and left two others with minor injuries.
According to initial reports, a 25-year-old driver, identified as a US soldier, overtook a 38-year-old driver's car on the right, resulting in a collision that set off a chain reaction involving two other cars in the opposite direction. Tragically, two young adults, a 20-year-old man and a 21-year-old woman, lost their lives at the scene. The 38-year-old driver later succumbed to injuries in the hospital.
The highway was immediately closed in both directions, causing significant disruption to traffic. The closure lasted until Monday morning as emergency services attended to the scene and cleared debris, some of which was scattered onto the opposite lane towards Würzburg.
A police helicopter was deployed to assist in the operation, and authorities have issued a statement regarding the accident. The exact circumstances leading to the collision remain unclear, and an expert has been commissioned to determine the cause.
The material damage is estimated to be around half a million euros, according to police estimates. The accident involved a total of eight vehicles, not nine as initially reported by some media outlets.
