Multiple fatalities reported in Russian assault on Ukraine
Ukraine, a nation located in Eastern Europe and almost twice as large as Germany, has been in the spotlight recently due to a series of unfortunate events. The city of Sumy, in particular, has been the epicentre of a tragic incident that occurred during celebrations for Palm Sunday.
Russia, a neighbouring country, has been attempting to exert control over parts of Ukraine since 2014, leading to conflicts that continue to this day. However, the latest incident in Sumy seems to have crossed a line, as more than 80 people, including many children, have been injured in the city centre.
The rockets that exploded in Sumy's city centre caused destruction to houses and cars, leaving a trail of devastation in their wake. The weapons in question are Taurus cruise missiles, launched from aircraft and capable of travelling far.
The attack has been condemned by leaders of many countries, with Olaf Scholz, the current German Chancellor, voicing his disapproval. Scholz, along with many EU politicians, works in Brussels, Belgium, where the European Union (EU)—an organization of 27 member states, including Germany—is headquartered.
Despite the calls for action, no European country has declared jointly and consensually with Germany that it will supply Taurus cruise missiles to Ukraine. Germany itself has long rejected delivering Taurus missiles due to political and military concerns.
Friedrich Merz, a likely contender for the next German Chancellor, has expressed support for sending special weapons to Ukraine for defence. However, Merz stipulates that such a move should only be taken if other EU countries agree.
Ukraine, a country with a smaller population compared to its size, has a rich cultural heritage. Its inhabitants predominantly speak Ukrainian and Russian, with Kyiv serving as the capital. As the world watches this unfold, the hope is for a peaceful resolution to the ongoing conflict.
