The city of Hamm is set to invest in a significant school renovation project, with construction scheduled to begin in spring 2026. The focus of this project is the Kettelerschule, where a new annex for the cafeteria and an Open-Ganztag School (OGS) extension, as well as a new sports hall, will be constructed.

The city's investment totals approximately 11.7 million euros. This includes the construction of two new sports halls, the OGS annex, a new annex for the Kettelerschule's cafeteria, and a green-roofed building similar to the existing auditorium. The city will also receive an 85% subsidy for the eligible total costs of the OGS annex, amounting to approximately 1.85 million euros.

The construction of the two sports halls will take place simultaneously, aiming for synergy effects in the construction process and financing. Each school, the Johannesschule in northern Hamm and the Erich-Kästner-Schule in Hamm-Heessen, will also receive a new gymnasium.

The new building for the Kettelerschule's cafeteria will be directly attached to the existing building with the auditorium and administration wing. The new building will have a fully glazed outer wall, providing maximum light ingress in the auditorium and cafeteria. The rooms can be used together or separately multifunctionally via a glass partition wall.

The construction of the OGS annex at the Kettelerschule is scheduled to begin in spring 2026 and will be completed in 2027, with the completion of the entire project planned for the start of the 2028/29 school year. The halls are designed as single sports halls, their roofs will be greened and equipped with photovoltaic systems.

The individuals present at the announcement of the school construction measures include Mayor Marc Herter, Sports Director Markus Kreuz, School Board Director Karin Diebäcker, Building Director Andreas Mentz, Beata Sick and Carmen Kannegiesser-Meier from the Immobilienmanagement of the city of Hamm, and Tom Olivier, principal of the Kettelerschule.
