After a six-year hiatus due to the Corona pandemic, the Cologne Lights returned to the Rhine on Saturday night, drawing thousands of spectators under a clear starry sky.

The event, which was first held in 1999, had previously been a much-anticipated annual spectacle, drawing large crowds every year. However, this year, the number of passenger ships participating was reduced from 54 to 24, and the total number of paying guests on the Rhine decreased from 20,000 to an unknown amount due to the reduced number of ships.

The main sponsor of the Cologne Lights in 2022 was RheinEnergie, and the event was held after problems with funding in 2019. The costs for this year's Cologne Lights were covered by several main sponsors and many smaller supporters.

Event organizer Werner Nolden provided the information about the reduced number of ships and the adapted security concept, which had to be significantly altered due to past attacks in Magdeburg and Solingen. A total of 1,600 police officers were on duty for the Cologne Lights and a separate demonstration in Cologne.

The standing places on the riverbank remained free, as in previous years, and the police reported a peaceful atmosphere at the event. The fireworks display was music-synchronized, adding an extra layer of excitement to the already spectacular event.

Despite the changes, the Cologne Lights continued to be a magical and memorable experience for all who attended, marking the start of the festive season in Cologne.
