Giorgio Armani: A Life of Fashion, Respect, and Legacy Comes to an End

Giorgio Armani, the iconic Italian fashion designer, passed away at the age of 91 on Thursday. His coffin will remain at the Teatro Armani in Milan until Sunday evening, where more than 6,000 people have paid their respects.

Armani's death marks the end of a remarkable life that spanned five decades in the fashion industry. He founded Giorgio Armani SpA, now worth many billions, in the mid-70s with his partner Sergio Galeotti. After Galeotti's early death in 1985, Armani owned the company alone.

The line of mourners stretched far out onto the street, with designer Donatella Versace among those paying their respects. The room where Armani's coffin is placed is darkened, lit by hundreds of paper lanterns. A large screen next to a large photo of Armani at the end of a fashion show displays a quote in Italian: "The legacy I want to leave is one of commitment, respect, and attention to people and reality. That's where it all begins."

According to Italian media reports, Armani had plans for his succession. The announced successor to Armani at the leadership of the Armani Group is not a single person but a gradual transition involving several key figures close to him. These include his nieces Silvana and Roberta, his sister Rosanna, her son Andrea Camerana, his right-hand Pantaleo Dell'Orco, and Federico Marchetti, the founder of Yoox, as part of a successor committee ensuring continuity and preserving the brand's integrity.

Armani spent his final days in one of his villas in Saint-Tropez on the French Riviera. He had announced his comeback for this month, but his declining health prevented him from doing so. Armani had to cancel his appearances at his shows in June and July due to health issues.

A bouquet of white roses lies on Armani's coffin, a symbol of the elegance and class that he brought to the fashion world. An exhibition dedicated to Armani's life's work is set to begin in Milan this month, providing a fitting tribute to a designer who will be sorely missed.

It is not yet known what will happen to Armani's company after his death. However, one thing is certain: Giorgio Armani's legacy of commitment, respect, and attention to people and reality will continue to inspire future generations of designers.
