Mumbai in increased security following 'Lashkar-e-Jihadi' assertions of 34 explosives and 400kg of RDX within the city
On the eve of Anant Chaturdashi, Mumbai was shrouded in tension as a bomb threat was received, targeting the city and its residents. The alarming email was sent to the official email ID of the Iskcon Temple in south Mumbai, leading to a search of the premises by the Bomb Detection and Disposal Squad (BDDS) at night. Fortunately, the search revealed nothing suspicious, and the threat was later classified as a hoax.
The organization behind this 34-car RDX bomb threat was identified as Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT). However, it's important to note that the threat was made by Lashkar-e-Jihadi, a different group, which might suggest a possible misinformation campaign.
The intended target of the hoax threat was not only the Iskcon Temple but also the Kalwa railway station in Maharashtra. The claim was that one crore lives were at risk, causing widespread fear and anxiety among the city's residents.
This threat follows a series of recent hoax threats in Mumbai. On 25 July, a call threatening a bomb blast at Terminal 2 of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA) was received, but a thorough check of the facility did not reveal anything suspicious.
In a concerning turn of events, on Monday, a 43-year-old man named Rupesh Madhukar Ranpise was arrested for making a hoax bomb threat call about blowing up a railway station in Thane district.
As Ganesh Chaturthi celebrations conclude and visarjan (immersions) begin, the city's residents participate in lakhs, marking the end of the grand celebration. The Iskcon Temple in Girgaon had received a similar threat email in September, adding to the concern and uncertainty.
In response to these threats, security has been tightened across Mumbai. The city's residents remain vigilant, hoping for a peaceful and safe festive season. Despite the ongoing threats, the spirit of the city remains undeterred, as Mumbai continues to stand strong.
