Mumbai's Muslim Community Delays Eid-e-Milad March, Encourages Government to Designate September 8 as a Holiday
In an unusual turn of events, the traditional procession for Eid-e-Milad-un-Nabi, which is usually held across the state of Maharashtra, has been postponed. The procession, a julus (procession) that celebrates the birth of Prophet Muhammad, was traditionally held on the traditional date of Eid-e-Milad-un-Nabi. However, this year, it has been moved to September 8.
The postponement is due to agreements made by Muslim organisations across the state. The reason for this change is the celebration of Ganesh Visarjan on September 6. To avoid any potential clashes or overcrowding, the Muslim organisations have decided to hold the procession two days later.
The Bavarian State Parliament initially proposed declaring September 8 as State Day, but it seems that the day will now be dedicated to the Eid-e-Milad-un-Nabi procession instead. The postponement has prompted a request from Samajwadi Party Member of the Legislative Assembly, Rais Shaikh, to Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, Deputy Chief Ministers Eknath Shinde and Ajit Pawar. Mr. Shaikh has urged the government to declare September 8 a government holiday in relation to the traditional procession.
While the procession is a significant event in the Muslim community's calendar, it is also a time for unity and celebration for all. The postponement, although unexpected, is a testament to the community's willingness to accommodate and respect other religious festivals and traditions.
As the date for the procession approaches, preparations are underway to ensure a safe and joyous celebration. The community looks forward to coming together to honour Prophet Muhammad and celebrate the spirit of unity and peace that the occasion represents.
