Germany's national basketball coach Mumbru resigns from leading the team in the Euro Championship - Mumbru, the basketball coach, to resign from his head coaching position
In a surprising turn of events, national coach Álex Mumbru has stepped down from his role for the EuroBasket tournament, with assistant coach Alan Ibrahimagic taking over the reins temporarily.
Mumbru, who took over the team from World Cup-winning coach Gordon Herbert after the Olympics in Paris last year, has been dealing with health issues. Just before the EuroBasket started, he suffered an "acute abdomen" and was hospitalized in Tampere, Finland. After receiving immediate medical treatment, he was discharged but continued to receive care at the team hotel during the tournament. Despite this, Mumbru has stated that he is not yet physically ready to actively coach the team from the sidelines during the games.
In his absence, Alan Ibrahimagic has been steering the ship. Ibrahimagic led the German basketball team to five wins in five games during the preliminary round in Tampere, demonstrating his capability and resilience.
The quarterfinal match against Slovenia, which will feature NBA superstar Luka Doncic, will take place on Wednesday at 8:00 PM in Riga. The game will be broadcast on RTL and MagentaSport, offering fans the opportunity to cheer for the team from the comfort of their homes.
Mumbru will still be present on the bench during the games, offering his support and guidance from a slightly less active role. The German Basketball Federation has announced that he will resume his role as head coach once he is fully fit.
The next mandatory game in the World Cup qualifiers for the German basketball team is not until November, providing Mumbru with ample time to recuperate and prepare for the next challenge. In the meantime, the focus shifts to Ibrahimagic and the team as they face Slovenia in the quarterfinals.
