Detmold, a city in North Rhine-Westphalia, has taken a significant step towards promoting sports for people with disabilities with the launch of the "Sport inclusive" project. The project, which began on July 1, 2023, is funded by the LWL Social Foundation gGmbH and has been instrumental in expanding the range of movement and sports offers for individuals with disabilities.

The aim of the project is to sustainably break down barriers and create an inclusive environment for everyone to participate in sports. Since its inception, 46 trainers have been specifically trained for inclusive sport in Detmold, with training costs covered until April 2026.

The city portal has released a press release about the project, which is available on their website. For inquiries about the project, residents can contact Daniela Lang, the project's contact person, at [email protected] or by phone at 05231 977 201.

Detmold's commitment to inclusivity doesn't stop with the "Sport inclusive" project. The city has been designated as a focus municipality for sport and inclusion as of mid-May 2025. As a result, the promotion of the participation of people with disabilities in sport will remain a central concern of Detmold's sports development planning even after the end of the project.

The project has already led to an increase in the number of inclusive club offers in Detmold to 24. Open offers such as the F.I.T. mobile, the open sports hall, and the Hermi run are now accessible and designed inclusively for everyone in Detmold.

In addition, Detmold is receiving additional support from Special Olympics NRW to further strengthen inclusion in sport and to permanently anchor it in the city society. The "Sport inclusive" project continues to receive support from Special Olympics NRW.

To provide more information, advice, and support on inclusive sports offers and funding opportunities, an open office hour has been set up at Heimspiel OWL, Market Square 3, every Tuesday from 10 to 13 o'clock.

The "Sport inclusive" project in Detmold is a testament to the city's dedication to creating a more inclusive and accessible community. With the project's success, Detmold is setting an example for other cities to follow in promoting the participation of people with disabilities in sport.
