Julia DeLuney Found Guilty of Murdering Mother Helen Gregory
In a shocking turn of events, Julia DeLuney has been found guilty of the murder of her mother, Helen Gregory, in Wellington on January 24, 2024. The verdict was delivered after a four-and-a-half-week trial at the High Court, which was extensively reported by Demelza Leslie, a reporter for our website.
The trial saw a series of compelling arguments from both the Crown and the defence. The Crown suggested that DeLuney attacked her mother with a heavy object, and that the scene was staged to make it appear as if Gregory fell from the attic. The defence, however, argued that someone else was responsible for the fatal injuries. They claimed that Gregory fell from the attic, and DeLuney left her in a bedroom to drive back to her Kapiti home to collect her husband Antonio DeLuney to help. CCTV footage caught changes in DeLuney's clothing on the night of the murder, and the trial revealed that she was involved in cryptocurrency transactions. The disposed mystery garbage bag, which was linked to attempts to conceal evidence related to the murder, was also a key piece of evidence.
The jury reached its verdict after just over a day of deliberation, and DeLuney was sentenced to life imprisonment with a minimum of 18 years non-parole. The defence maintained their claims of innocence throughout the trial, but the evidence presented was overwhelming.
Helen Gregory was 79 years old at the time of her death. First responders suspected it was not an accident based on their initial assessment, and the crime scene confirmed their suspicions.
