Music becomes Diego El Gavi's medium for promoting inclusivity
Diego El Gavi, a Romani singer from Lisbon, is set to captivate audiences with his unique blend of flamenco and Latin jazz in a series of concerts and workshops titled 'Flamenco Without Borders'. The project, a cultural integration initiative, will kick off on September 5th at the Centro Cultural Olga Cadaval in Sintra.
Diego El Gavi's musical journey began in his youth when he created the project Les Gitanes with his cousins, making versions of flamenco songs. This passion was ignited in Porto, where a cassette of the Gipsy Kings, given to him by his mother, sparked an interest in the sonic arts of his ethnicity.
In Madrid, El Gavi encountered the language and culture of flamenco, which further fuelled his passion. His collaboration with documentary filmmaker Tiago Pereira on the project 'A Música Cigana a Gostar Dela Própria' is a testament to this. The director of the documentary is Ricardo Costa.
El Gavi's dedication to the integration of the Romani community into society is evident in his work. The project is supported by the Agency for Integration, Migration and Asylum (AIMA). In 2019, he released his first album, 'Puerta del Alma', which he will perform at the concerts, alongside new tracks from an upcoming album.
El Gavi will be accompanied by Sina Shirazi (flamenco guitar), Pedro Aguilar Corrales (bass), Sebastian Scheriff (drums), and Carlos Mil-Homens (percussion). Each concert will be followed by a theoretical and practical flamenco workshop, open to spectators aged 12 and above.
The project will travel to various cities, including Almada's Teatro Municipal Joaquim Benite on September 12th, the IPDJ's auditorium in Faro on September 19th, and Theatro Gil Vicente in Barcelos on November 28th. El Gavi will also perform at the Festa do Avante in Seixal, Setúbal on September 6th.
The 'Flamenco Without Borders' project is more than just a series of concerts. It's a celebration of culture, a call for integration, and a testament to the power of music. Join Diego El Gavi in this exciting journey and experience the fusion of flamenco and Latin jazz that promises to leave you spellbound.
