Swiss Conductor Stefan Blunier Appointed as General Music Director of Duisburger Philharmoniker

Stefan Blunier, a renowned Swiss conductor with extensive experience, has been officially appointed as the General Music Director (GMD) of an unspecified institution. This appointment also makes him the chief conductor of the Duisburger Philharmoniker, a prestigious German orchestra.

Blunier's tenure will begin in the 2026/2027 season and last for three years. The appointment process was a joint search, agreed upon by the intendant and the orchestra, with the involvement of the administration and representatives of the cultural committee.

Cultural Commissioner Linda Wagner expressed her pride in the selection of Blunier as GMD, stating that he will bring fresh ideas and drive the Duisburger Philharmoniker forward. Mayor Sören Link also expressed his pleasure with the appointment, expressing confidence that Blunier will lead the orchestra to new heights.

Blunier currently holds a professorship for symphonic conducting at the University of Music and Performing Arts Mannheim. His international activities and high reputation are evidenced by over 35 CDs for labels such as Sony, CPO, Hyperion, Crystal, MDG, and countless radio productions.

In the upcoming season, Blunier will be a guest conductor with the Duisburg Philharmonic, including performances in the Hamburg Elbphilharmonie, the New Year's concert, and several Philharmonic concerts. He also plans to collaborate with the Duisburger Philharmoniker to create dramatic surprise effects in concerts using preludes, interludes, and postludes.

One of the highlights of the upcoming season will be the performance of Beethoven's Symphony No. 9 and Bruckner's Symphony No. 7. Blunier aims to make concert experiences more sensual, stimulating, and humorous. He also intends to commission more compositions and dedicate himself to the diversity of new music.

Notable performances alongside Blunier in one of the Philharmonic concerts will be Frank Peter Zimmermann. Blunier has premiered works by contemporary composers such as Staudt, Turnage, Francesconi, Haas, and Chin, and he plans to commission new composers in the upcoming season with the Duisburger Philharmoniker, although the specific names of these new composers are not mentioned in the available sources.

The appointment ceremony took place in the town hall, attended by Mayor Sören Link, Cultural Commissioner Linda Wagner, and Intendant Nils Szczepanski. Blunier's studies in piano, horn, composition, and conducting in Bern and Essen, as well as his positions in several German cities including Darmstadt, Bonn, and Porto, have prepared him for this prestigious role.

Blunier's three-year tenure with the Duisburger Philharmoniker is expected to be an exciting time for the orchestra and classical music enthusiasts alike. With his extensive experience, innovative ideas, and commitment to new music, Blunier is poised to lead the Duisburger Philharmoniker to new heights.
