Narrow-gauge railway in Harz: Renovation of a specific track segment is essential

The Harzer Schmalspurbahnen (HSB), a popular tourist attraction in the Harz County, is set for a significant renovation, with the Brocken line at the heart of the project. According to County Commissioner Thomas Balcerowski (CDU), the Brocken line requires renovation, and the HSB's track network and trains need substantial investment.

Negotiations between the federal states of Saxony-Anhalt and Thuringia are currently underway to secure financing for the renovation. Saxony-Anhalt has pledged around 15 million euros for 2024, with additional funding planned for 2024 and 2025. Both states are discussing further funding, given the estimated essential investment needs in the triple-digit million-euro range. However, no specific details or investment amounts have been disclosed at this time.

The renovation of the Brocken line is expected to take several years. To keep stakeholders informed, a staff meeting at the HSB is scheduled for next Tuesday, and a supervisory board meeting is planned for Thursday.

The HSB operates the longest continuous narrow-gauge network in Germany, with approximately 140 kilometers. The steam locomotives of the HSB are a well-known tourist attraction in the Harz, drawing visitors from around the world.

County Commissioner Balcerowski has discussed far-reaching decisions that need to be made regarding the HSB. He expects positive signals from ongoing discussions in Saxony-Anhalt and Thuringia regarding the HSB's renovation.

Discussions about the future of the HSB are ongoing in both states. Balcerowski emphasised the importance of the HSB as a cultural and economic asset for the region and expressed confidence in a successful outcome for the renovation project.

As the renovation progresses, updates will be provided to keep the public informed about the status of the project and any developments that may arise.
