Nationwide Alert Day Happening in Düsseldorf on Thursday (7th)
On Thursday, September 14, 2023, a nationwide civil protection exercise will take place in Germany, involving sirens, mobile phone alerts, and other warning systems. Cities across the federal state of North Rhine-Westphalia (NRW), including Düsseldorf, will participate in this drill to test alarm chains and raise public awareness.
In Düsseldorf, 82 sirens in the city area will be tested as part of the statewide warning day. Residents are advised to stay calm and continuously monitor radio, TV, internet, and social media from the city and fire department for specific action recommendations. The fire department will cooperate with Antenne Düsseldorf to inform about the warning day via local radio.
Notices about the siren test alarm will be displayed on the 680 digital display boards of the Rheinbahn at the stops, as well as on the city's traffic information boards. For more details, residents can visit the Facebook pages of the state capital and the fire department.
The test alarm will be triggered centrally through the warning system (MoWaS), which will also activate various warning channels. At 11 AM, a "Warning" signal, an ascending and descending continuous tone lasting about one minute, will sound in Düsseldorf. This will be followed by the "All Clear" signal, a continuous tone lasting one minute, at 11 AM, 11:06 AM, and again at 11:12 AM from the 82 siren installations in Düsseldorf.
Since the end of February 2023, Cell Broadcast has been added as a warning channel for immediate danger in NRW, targeting mobile devices within the state capital. During the siren test, Cell Broadcast will be triggered via the modular warning system (MoWaS) of the BBK. This feature does not require special software and is intended as a wake-up call to encourage people to seek further information.
