Nationwide Warning Day: Activation of Sirens, Cell Broadcast Warnings, and Warning Apps on 11th September
On Thursday, September 11, the Herford district will participate in the annual nationwide civil defense drill. This important event, which takes place on the second Thursday in September, aims to test the functionality and potential vulnerabilities of warning systems across the state and municipalities.
The central trigger for the stationary sirens in the Herford district will be managed by the Kreisleitstelle Herford (Herford district control center). At 11 a.m., three siren tones will be triggered, serving as a vital opportunity to ensure the warning systems are functioning effectively, especially in light of climate change and recurring extreme weather conditions.
During the drill, the population will be alerted to sudden dangers such as extreme weather conditions, accidents involving hazardous substances, or fires. The siren alarm will be centrally triggered by the district control center in Hiddenhausen with a push of a button.
The siren network in the district of Herford is currently undergoing expansion and renovation, replacing old sirens and establishing new locations. However, some individual visible sirens may not be triggered during the drill as they are not yet technically connected to the control center.
The drill will also test the functionality of the already set-up sirens, particularly those that did not function during the last drill and those added since then. The aim is to raise awareness among the population about the significance of different warning signals.
In addition to the stationary sirens, other warning means and end devices will be tested during the drill. These include the KatWarn and NINA warning apps, city advertising panels, and the Cell Broadcast system. The Cell Broadcast system serves as a supplement to the warning apps, reaching smartphones without technical pre-settings.
The warning apps provide important additional information from the fire and rescue service control centers, BBK (Federal Agency for Technical Relief), and DWD (German Weather Service). The drill is a joint action day of the federal government, states, and municipalities.
District Administrator Jürgen Müller emphasizes the importance of regional, state, and national warning days for identifying areas of improvement and enhancing warning efforts. The all-clear will be announced via the same warning means and end devices used during the drill, around 11:45 a.m.
This year's civil defense drill is a crucial step towards ensuring the safety and preparedness of the population in the face of potential emergencies. By testing and improving our warning systems, we can better protect our communities and respond effectively to any threats that may arise.
