Gravel pathway around Eller Wood pond restored and functional once more - recently finished construction project concluded

The city of Greifswald has recently completed the redesign of the 1.1 km long circular route around Ellernholzteich Lake, making it accessible for pedestrians and cyclists. This comprehensive redesign, scheduled to begin in 2025, includes the addition of new benches, a barbecue area, shade-providing trees, and improved connections to surrounding residential areas.

As part of this project, two new culverts were built: one for the loop, another for the cycle path leading to the school grounds. The construction works for these culverts, carried out by the Greifswald company ASA Bau, lasted approximately four and a half months and cost around 450,000 euros.

The redesign of the loop falls under the category of natural climate protection, funded under the KfW program "Natural Climate Protection in Municipalities". The aim was to ecologically enhance the watercourse and increase its drainage capacity. In heavy rain, more water can now be directed to the rainwater retention basin due to the new culverts.

The drainage ditch 25/1 at Ellernholzteich was redesigned as part of the development of an inclusive school center. The redesign of the loop is expected to benefit the environment and the students of the future school center.

The specific design for the redesign of the loop has already been commissioned, with completion scheduled for the end of 2025. Construction for the redesign of the loop is set to begin in 2026. Final planting around the new culvert is scheduled for fall.

This redesign marks a significant step towards a more sustainable and inclusive cityscape in Greifswald. The improved drainage capacity and the addition of amenities such as benches, a barbecue area, and trees will not only enhance the aesthetic appeal of the area but also contribute to a healthier and more enjoyable environment for all.
