New Innovation and STEM Centre to Open at West Nottinghamshire College in 2024

West Nottinghamshire College is set to expand its educational offerings with the construction of a new facility focusing on innovation and STEM subjects. The project, which has received approval, will take place at the Chesterfield Road campus and is expected to open in autumn 2024.

The new centre will provide 1,343 sq. m. of teaching space over two floors, making it a substantial addition to the college's existing facilities. The construction is part of one of the district's biggest expansions in educational and skills provision for decades.

The funding for the project comes from a £4.3m allocation from the council's Towns Fund pot and £3.827m from the Education and Skills Funding Agency. The demolition of the former visual art and design building, known as the Mansfield School of Art, is scheduled to begin within the next few weeks to make way for the new facility.

The new institution aims to meet future labor market needs, plug skills gaps, and create well-paid jobs in Mansfield and the surrounding district. It is also designed to attract new employers to Mansfield by offering high-level, industry-relevant skills.

Cllr Stuart Richardson expressed enthusiasm about the project's approval, stating that it will deliver a skills hub for the next generation. The facility will serve as a focal delivery point for T levels, new qualifications developed in collaboration with employers, being introduced by the college.

The project is one of two Towns Funds projects now progressing at pace, including the Warsop Health Hub. The new educational facility will offer qualifications at level three and above, making it an ideal choice for those seeking to further their education in STEM subjects.

This week, young adults and teenagers have picked up their A level results for this year. With the new facility set to open in just over two years, it presents an exciting opportunity for the next generation to gain the skills necessary to excel in the rapidly evolving world of technology and innovation.
