VfL Wolfsburg remained unbeaten under new coach Paul Simonis, but the team has work ahead after a 1:1 draw with FSV Mainz 05 at home. The result extended Wolfsburg's home win drought to mid-January.

The goal for Wolfsburg came in the 9th minute, courtesy of Aaron Zehnter. Mainz, however, had their chances to win in the extended stoppage time, only to be denied by the crossbar.

Mainz avoided a poor start to the league and carried momentum from their 4:1 win over Rosenborg Trondheim. Despite having more possession, they struggled to create clear chances against Wolfsburg's robust defense.

Mainz's equalizer came in the 90th minute, as a penalty was awarded due to a handball by Wolfsburg's Konstantinos Koulierakis in the penalty area. Nadiem Amiri converted the spot-kick for Mainz.

The game took an interesting turn when Wolfsburg's Mattias Svanberg was shown a red card, leaving the team to play with ten men.

In the latest transfer period, Wolfsburg signed Jenson Seelt on loan from Sunderland and Adam Daghim on loan from Red Bull Salzburg. They also sold young defender David Odogu to AC Milan. Mainz is close to signing William Bøving, a 22-year-old Danish striker currently playing for Sturm Graz in Austria, for around €3 million.

Referee Sören Storks didn't award a penalty after a handball situation involving Wolfsburg's Vinicius de Souza Costa. Mainz coach Bo Henriksen started Nelson Weiper in attack, who had been linked with a move away. Weiper had a tough time against Wolfsburg's defense.

VfL sports director Sebastian Schindzielorz stated that nothing extraordinary would have to happen for Mohamed Amoura and Patrick Wimmer to stay with the team. Benfica Lisbon showed interest in Amoura but found Wolfsburg's €40 million asking price too high.

Elsewhere, Hamm celebrated a big party, dealt with a major internet outage, and opened its doors for HSHL and Hamm Experience 2025. These updates from Hamm serve as a stark contrast to the tense and exciting football match between Wolfsburg and Mainz.
