New designs for the Folio Society books have been revealed, and I can't help but be captivated by them
The New Spring Collection from The Folio Society
The Folio Society, a renowned publisher known for its book cover art and illustrations, has released its latest offering - the Spring collection of 2024. This year, 39 artists have been commissioned to work on a variety of projects, each bringing their unique vision to the table.
With a history spanning nearly 80 years, The Folio Society has built a reputation for producing works of art alongside books. This tradition continues with the Spring collection, featuring the work of seven talented artists: Cristina Bencina, David Lupton, Michael Herr, Robert Carter, Alexis Deacon, Neil Bousfield, and Julie Dillon.
Cristina Bencina, one of the standout artists in this collection, won the Folio Book Illustration Award for her work on Ursula K. Le Guin's "The Fliers of Gy". Julie Dillon, a digital artist who has worked with digital art magazine ImagineFX, is also part of the Spring collection.
The process of completing a book project between an artist and The Folio Society is not publicly disclosed. However, it is known that each illustrator is given the freedom to express their creativity, resulting in a distinctive Folio edition.
The Publishing team at The Folio Society carefully curates each collection to offer a mix of fiction and non-fiction, spanning a wide range of genres. For instance, Clive Hicks-Jenkins is currently working on illustrating Homer's Iliad and Odyssey for an upcoming edition.
Hicks-Jenkins, like many artists who work with The Folio Society, uses a combination of traditional and modern techniques. His work often includes gouache, pencil, oil pastel, collage, etching techniques, and other analogue methods. Some artists blend classic methods with modern tools, while others work predominantly with digital or analogue tools.
The Folio Society releases four seasonal collections each year: Spring, Summer, Autumn, and Holiday. The new Spring collection is now available, offering readers a fresh array of beautifully illustrated books to explore. Whether you're a fan of classic literature or contemporary fiction, there's something in the Spring collection for everyone.
