Tamil Nadu: New MLA Sworn In, Demands for Social Justice and Enquiry Raised

In a ceremony presided over by the Speaker M Appavu on Monday at the Assembly, V C Chandrakumar was sworn in as the MLA from Erode East constituency, increasing the DMK's strength in the 234-member Tamil Nadu Assembly to 133.

Chandrakumar, the present president of the VCK, made a statement to the media following his swearing-in, expressing his commitment to fulfilling his promises to the people within a year.

Thirumavalavan, a prominent figure and a demand from the VCK, was also present at the ceremony. He described Chandrakumar's victory as a reaffirmation that the State is a land of social justice. However, Thirumavalavan also placed four demands to the Chief Minister during a meeting in the Secretariat.

These demands included an end to caste violence against SC/ST people, ensuring the promotion of government officers belonging to Scheduled Castes and Tribes through Section 164-a of the Constitution, a commission of enquiry by a retired judge into the Vengaivayal issue, and the exposure of a supposed secret deal between the AIADMK and the BJP.

Thirumavalavan claimed that there is proof of a conspiracy by the Sangh Parivar behind the boycott of the polls by the AIADMK, which was allegedly responsible for the present FIR on the Vengaivayal case not being final. The specifics of the Vengaivayal issue and the nature of the alleged crime and victimization are not detailed in the provided information.

The DMK's other allies have a total of 8 members - VCK 4, CPI 2, and CPM 2. The Congress has 18 members in the Assembly. The Chief Minister M K Stalin, Deputy Chief Minister Udhayanidai Stalin, Thol Thirumavalavan, and other State Ministers were also present at the ceremony.

Chandrakumar's prediction of a total sweep by the DMK in the 2026 Assembly polls adds to the optimism within the party. However, the challenges ahead in addressing the demands for social justice and transparency remain significant.
