New occupants for The Machinery in Berlin-Kreuzberg expected in early 2026
The heart of Berlin-Kreuzberg is pulsating with new life, as the Macherei quarter takes shape along the Hallesches Ufer. This mixed-use development, combining apartments, offices, gastronomy, and social infrastructure, is filling the construction gap between Kreuzberg and Mitte, offering a sustainable urban environment.
At its core lies the renovated former Postscheckamt building, the architectural heart of the quarter. The Macherei boasts two new additions - the "M40" and "M60" buildings, constructed with sustainable materials such as cross-laminated timber sourced from certified European forestry. The "M40" is the largest wooden bridge building in Germany, saving 45 percent CO2 compared to a reference building. The "M60" office building, now complete, will operate climate-neutrally, thanks to photovoltaic systems.
The Macherei offers a variety of amenities to its residents and visitors. Green spaces, shops, and sustainable mobility options are integrated seamlessly into the urban landscape. The quarter also features a diverse range of gastronomy concepts, including EDEN, offering Vietnamese specialties in the "M60", and Agiori, an ice cream parlor that opened in the "M40" in May.
The Macherei is home to both subsidized units owned by DEGEWO and privately financed units, providing housing options for a wide range of residents. In 2023, Accenture was announced as the first major tenant in the "M40", and in early 2026, Stripe, a US financial services provider, will move into the "M40" building, renting approximately 3,000 square meters. Stripe aims to better serve its German users and provide a modern working environment for over 100 employees.
The Macherei embodies a vision of integrating residential, work, and public spaces without compromising sustainability and quality of life. It stands as a testament to Berlin's commitment to urban development that prioritizes both environmental responsibility and community well-being. As construction continues and more tenants move in, the Macherei is poised to become a new urban hub, connecting Kreuzberg and Mitte in more ways than one.
