New Online Gambling Regulations Set for Implementation in the UK in 2024

The UK Gambling Commission, the official regulatory authority responsible for licensing and enforcing gambling laws in the UK, has announced new regulations for the online gambling industry. These regulations, set to roll out by next summer, aim to offer better protection against addiction and enhance player safety in the UK's online gambling landscape.

The new measures will require online gambling providers to bear a greater responsibility for their industry's impact. This includes taking more responsibility for their players' safety and supporting research, education, and treatment related to gambling addiction through a mandatory levy imposed on betting providers.

One of the key changes will be the installation of a new industry ombudsman to handle disputes between players and operators. Additionally, protective measures such as player protection checks are being considered to safeguard particularly vulnerable players.

The regulations also propose stake limits on slots, with potential limits between £2-£15 per spin. Other potential measures, including bans on specific bonuses and advertisements, are under consideration to further curb potential risks.

The Gambling Commission will also have increased authority to address non-compliant providers. To ensure transparency and fairness, platforms offering insights into various online gambling providers are becoming common.

The boom in the online gambling sector, mainly attributed to the proliferation of smartphones, has resulted in an influx of online gambling sites. Recognising the need for stricter regulations, the UK government is introducing these new measures to protect especially vulnerable players from potential risks.

The specifics around the many potential measures are still to be determined. The UK government has released a detailed white paper outlining the impending law, set for release in June 2024. These new regulations mark a significant step towards a safer and more responsible online gambling environment in the UK.
