New school year statistics unveiled by Education Minister
In the educational landscape of Brandenburg, changes are on the horizon. The focus of these changes is to ensure teaching coverage despite a decrease in teaching positions, a challenge that has been a topic of concern for both educators and parents.
Education Minister Steffen Freiberg (SPD) will present figures and facts about teaching coverage in Brandenburg on Wednesday at 2:00 PM, shedding light on the current state of affairs.
Last year, around one-fifth of the 22,000 teaching staff in the state were provided by lateral entrants, highlighting the need for a steady teaching force. However, the education budget in the state budget has increased overall, yet the number of teaching positions has decreased, leading to a reduction of 345 full-time teaching positions in the Brandenburg budget for this year.
This reduction in teaching positions may result in possible cuts to additional offers such as remedial teaching or project work, particularly in the first half of the year. To offset this, teachers in Brandenburg will have to teach one additional hour per week from the second half of the year. This change will bring relief to teachers elsewhere, as their workloads are reduced.
The Brandenburg Teachers' Association had warned of chaos due to these reductions in teaching positions and workload changes, expressing their concerns about the potential impact on the quality of education. The teacher association that criticized these reductions is the Landeseltern- und Lehrkräftevertretung Brandenburg (state parents and teachers representation of Brandenburg).
In an effort to create more clarity and introduce children responsibly to digital media, the Education Ministry aims to ban private mobile phones and tablets during lessons at primary and special schools for the coming school year. This move is intended to foster a more focused learning environment for students.
The changes in teaching hours and workload have caused protests from teachers and parents, underscoring the importance of open dialogue and understanding as these changes are implemented. The ultimate goal remains to secure teaching, especially at primary schools, ensuring a solid foundation for the future of education in Brandenburg.
