New Season Kicks Off with an Award for the State Chapel

The Sächsische Staatskapelle Dresden is set to open its 2025/26 concert season with a special event. Chief conductor Daniele Gatti will lead the orchestra in a performance of Gustav Mahler's Fifth Symphony, marking the first symphony concert of the new season.

This symphony, the first of Mahler's "Vienna years", represents his return to purely instrumental form. The performance promises to be a highlight of the season, as the Sächsische Staatskapelle Dresden continues its Mahler cycle, which began last season with the "Wunderhorn years".

In addition to Mahler's Fifth Symphony, the season opener will feature the "Rückert-Lieder" by Mahler. Internationally renowned mezzo-soprano Marie-Nicole Lemieux will interpret these poignant songs, under the direction of Daniele Gatti.

The Sächsische Staatskapelle Dresden, a traditional orchestra and cultural ambassador of the Semperoper, will also be honoured during the first symphony concert. The orchestra will receive the "Rudi-Häussler-Preis" of the Semperoper Foundation - Sponsorship Foundation. This prestigious award is given to recognise extraordinary artistic radiance.

The "Rudi-Häussler-Preis" is a fitting acknowledgement of the Sächsische Staatskapelle Dresden's contributions to the cultural landscape. The orchestra has long been a beacon of musical excellence, and its continued dedication to the Mahler cycle is a testament to its commitment to exploring the rich musical history of the past.

Daniele Gatti will also combine the performance of Mahler's Fifth Symphony with the "Requiem" by Tōru Takemitsu during the season opener. This innovative programming promises to create a unique and memorable musical experience for audiences.

As the Sächsische Staatskapelle Dresden opens its new concert season, it does so with a sense of excitement and anticipation. The first symphony concert promises to be a special event, filled with the powerful music of Mahler and the rich cultural heritage of the Sächsische Staatskapelle Dresden.
