Next Year's iPhone 13 Models Might Include 120Hz Screen Refresh Rates
In the world of tech news, The Elec, a Korean outlet, has reported some intriguing details about the upcoming iPhone 13. It appears that Apple could be planning a significant display upgrade for at least the Pro models of the iPhone 13, potentially including high refresh rate support.
This move towards higher refresh rates mirrors a growing trend in the smartphone industry, similar to the trend observed in high-end monitors and laptops. Samsung introduced 120Hz refresh rates on the Galaxy S20 line, and the Galaxy Note 20 Ultra debuted with Samsung's new 120Hz VRR panels. The OnePlus 8 Pro also boasts a 120Hz screen, sourced from Samsung.
If the reports are accurate, the iPhone 13 Pro and iPhone 13 Pro Max models could benefit from LTPO Thin-Film Transistors, enabling support for 120 Hz refresh rates. This technology could significantly improve the smoothness and fluidity of games, web surfing, and more.
Samsung is expected to be the primary supplier of iPhone 13 displays, shipping around 130 to 140 million panels. Chinese display maker BOE may also supply between 10 and 20 million iPhone 13 displays, but BOE needs to reapply to become an approved vendor in Apple's supply chain after failing quality assurance reviews.
LG, on the other hand, could supply between 30 and 40 million iPhone 13 displays. This news follows the generally positive reviews the iPhone 12 line received across the industry.
Apple aims to ship between 160 and 180 million iPhones in 2021, an increase from around 100 million in 2020. It's worth noting that Apple did not support high refresh rate displays on the iPhone 12 line, and Google's Pixel 5 retained a 90Hz display similar to the one on the Pixel 4.
Asus gave the ROG Phone 3 a 144Hz display, but it remains to be seen whether Apple will push the refresh rate even higher with the iPhone 13. The iPhone 13, expected in 2021, may also feature OLED screens for all models.
The iPhone 12, iPhone 12 Pro, iPhone 12 Pro Max, and iPhone 12 Mini were reviewed extensively, and while the battery life was a point of contention, the overall reception was positive. With the potential display upgrade for the iPhone 13, it seems Apple is aiming to deliver an even more impressive device next year.
