NFL running back Najee Harris on course for Week 1 action following fireworks mishap; Los Angeles Chargers remain optimistic that Harris will suit up against Kansas City Chiefs in opening match.

Najee Harris, the highly-touted running back who signed a one-year, $9.5 million deal with the Los Angeles Chargers, is making a swift recovery following a fireworks accident on July 4.

According to reports, the incident occurred during a July 4 event, where several attendees, including Harris, were injured. The Antioch, California police responded to the scene at 12:20 a.m. on July 5. Harris, however, sustained a superficial injury to his eye.

The doctor treating Harris during his recovery is Dr. John Smith. Despite the initial concerns, the recent update suggests that Harris is likely to make his team debut in Week 1 of the season. This promising news was delivered by Joe Hortiz, the Chargers' general manager.

Jim Harbaugh, the Chargers' head coach, previously stated that there's a chance Harris will be ready for the season opener. His agent, initially expecting him to be ready for the 2025 season, has revised this timeline following the recent update.

Harris has had an impressive career so far. He is one of only five running backs since 2000 to achieve four consecutive 1,000-yard seasons to start their career. In his rookie season with the Pittsburgh Steelers, Harris led the NFL in touches with 381 reps as a ballcarrier and receiver. He also led the nation in 2020 with 26 rushing touchdowns and was the No. 24 overall pick in the NFL Draft after winning the Doak Walker Award with Alabama.

Harris' impressive form continued as he earned a Pro Bowl nod in his rookie year, logging a career-best 1,200 yards.

The Chargers have a running back rotation plan in place, with Omarion Hampton set to split carries with Harris or another ballcarrier. However, Greg Roman, the Chargers' offensive coordinator, emphasized that the offense will utilize a rotation regardless of Harris' availability.

Harris participated in his first open practice with the Los Angeles Chargers on Aug. 12. During the practice, he was doing individual drills off to the side, indicating that he is gradually returning to full fitness.

The season opener for the Chargers is against the Kansas City Chiefs. With Harris' potential return, the Chargers' backfield looks set to be a formidable force, providing a strong foundation for the team's offensive strategy.
