NFL team Pittsburgh Steelers acquire safety Jabrill Peppers, following unexpected release by New England Patriots
Pittsburgh Steelers Sign Former Patriots Safety Jabrill Peppers
The Pittsburgh Steelers have bolstered their secondary by signing Jabrill Peppers, a former standout on the New England Patriots' defense. The move comes after the team's safety, DeShon Elliott, suffered an injury during the game against the New York Jets, forcing him to miss Week 2.
Peppers, who was released by the Patriots during their offseason roster cut-downs, played six games for them last season. He recorded forty tackles and an interception, demonstrating his capabilities as a solid defender. However, he had nagging lower-body injuries during his time with the Patriots.
The Steelers, who recently had a win against the Jets despite their defense getting torched by former Pittsburgh quarterback Justin Fields most of the game, are hoping that Peppers will shine in a good defense. The team has also made other notable acquisitions this offseason, including former All-Pro corner Jalen Ramsey and Super Bowl champion Darius Slay.
The Steelers initially wanted to add more star power to their secondary, and they believe Peppers, despite not being the game-altering talent he was at one point, will still be a solid addition. This is supported by Peppers' impressive track record, which includes his time with the Cleveland Browns and the New York Giants.
Juan Thornhill and DeShon Elliott, who are solid safeties for the Steelers, will likely benefit from Peppers' presence. The team has also moved on from star safety Minkah Fitzpatrick.
Ian Rapoport reported that the Steelers have agreed to sign Peppers, and many teams were reportedly interested in acquiring his services. Peppers is expected to make an immediate impact in Pittsburgh, providing much-needed depth and experience to the Steelers' secondary.
