Nigel and the Destructive Storm
In the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, a little boy named Nigel Tapp found himself fleeing his home in New Orleans and enrolling in a pre-K community in Montclair, New Jersey. This unexpected turn of events would serve as a catalyst for his former classmates, who rallied around him in a remarkable display of friendship and activism.
Nigel's classmates, including Daniel Rosen, TRIN Caverness, Tobin Williams, Soph Plaut, and eight others, were deeply affected when he left Montclair. They remembered the practice of listing who was missing Nigel after he left, and they never forgot him.
Ms. Channin, Nigel's pre-K teacher, decided to write a book titled "Nigel And The Hurricane" to teach her students about real-world events. The book contained memories of Nigel, information about Katrina, and was sold around town to raise funds for him and his family. The former classmates believe that the book, which combined art and activism, will be something they carry with them forever.
The emotions expressed by the former classmates during the creation and promotion of the book remain with them to this day. Daniel Rosen remembers being deeply affected when Nigel left Montclair, while TRIN shares how she and Tillie (ph) would dig in the ground in an attempt to reach New Orleans after Nigel left.
The book taught the former classmates valuable lessons about friendship, activism, and the importance of emotional investment in helping others. They believe that the work of helping people involves not just getting resources and funds, but also putting oneself emotionally into the effort.
Nigel was surprised with a reunion of his pre-K classmates on Zoom, and he was also reunited with Ms. Channin over the platform. Alana Schreiber, now living and working in New Orleans, was 8 years old when Hurricane Katrina made landfall. She expresses gratitude for the interview and the opportunity to share the impact of the book "Nigel And The Hurricane" on her former classmates.
The former classmates still have a copy of the book "Nigel And The Hurricane," and they hold it dear as a symbol of their friendship and their shared commitment to making a difference in the world. The book served as a catalyst for them to learn about real-world events and the importance of activism and making a difference, lessons they will carry with them forever.
