Nighttime Nausea and Vomiting During Pregnancy: An Examination
Morning sickness, a common experience during pregnancy, is not limited to the morning hours. This feeling of nausea and vomiting can affect up to 90% of pregnant women, according to gynecologist Selena Zanotti, MD.
The cause of morning sickness is often linked to changes in hormones, particularly estrogen and progesterone, during pregnancy. HCG (human chorionic gonadotropin), a hormone peaking in the first trimester, may also contribute to pregnancy nausea and vomiting.
The time, frequency, and intensity of morning sickness can vary greatly from person to person and may change throughout pregnancy. It is most likely to happen during the first trimester (roughly 14 weeks) of pregnancy, though it can last into the second trimester, and beyond.
Fortunately, there are several strategies to help manage morning sickness. Eating small meals regularly and keeping easy-on-the-stomach snacks like crackers or nuts on hand can help curb morning sickness at night. Changing the time of day when prenatal vitamins are taken can also help reduce morning sickness.
Propping up the top half (head to chest) with extra pillows can provide relief at night, while ginger (in supplements, tea, candy, or root) and sour foods and candies can help relieve morning sickness during the day or night. The BRAT diet (bananas, rice, apples, and toast) can also offer relief.
Severe morning sickness, known as hyperemesis gravidarum, can lead to dehydration and may require medical attention. This condition, characterised by frequent vomiting, weight loss, and persistent nausea, should not be ignored.
It's important to note that the association between morning sickness at night and the baby's biological sex is not well-established, with no large studies confirming a link or determining a reason for it.
Morning sickness is likely to ease up in the second trimester, offering pregnant women some much-needed relief. However, if symptoms persist or worsen, it's always best to consult with a healthcare provider.
