Nikkiso to Provide LNG Equipment for Bahamas Power Generation endeavor
The Bahamas is making strides in its renewable energy ambitions, with the European Union (EU) and the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) providing financial support for the country's endeavours.
One of the key projects receiving backing is the New Providence gas project, which is being developed in Nassau. This project is significant for companies looking to expand lower-carbon power generation. Once operational, the project will have the capacity to regasify 55 million cubic feet of Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) per day.
The aim of the project is to reduce carbon emissions by using LNG instead of diesel for powering new and upgraded gas turbines. This aligns with the Bahamas' goal to source 30% of its energy needs from renewables by 2030.
The project involves an LNG receiving terminal for additional power generation at Clifton Pier. Nikkiso Clean Energy & Industrial Gases Group (Nikkiso CE&IG Group) has been chosen to supply the necessary liquefied natural gas regasification and cryogenic equipment for the project. Adrian Ridge, President and CEO of Nikkiso CE&IG Group, emphasised the importance of cryogenic equipment for companies expanding lower-carbon power generation.
In addition to the EU grant and the IDB loan, the Bahamas' renewable energy efforts are also supported by an $80 million IDB loan. This funding will contribute to the Bahamas' larger strategy to reduce carbon emissions.
It's worth noting that the New Providence gas project is not the only project in the Bahamas aimed at expanding lower-carbon power generation. The Bahamian government recognises LNG as a bridge to the adoption of renewable energy, and the country's renewable energy efforts are part of a broader commitment to combat climate change.
As the first gas turbines of the New Providence gas project are expected to be operational in the first quarter of 2026, it's an exciting time for the Bahamas as it moves towards a more sustainable energy future.
