NIRF Rankings 2025: National Law Universities (NLUs) reign supreme in the top 5; NLSIU, NLU Delhi, NALSAR hold on to top positions
The Ministry of Education has announced the NIRF 2025 Law School rankings, with the National Law School of India University (NLSIU), Bengaluru retaining its position as the best law school in India for the eighth consecutive year.
The NLSIU's dominance was closely followed by the National Law University, Delhi (NLU Delhi), which maintained its second place rank. The National Academy of Legal Studies and Research (NALSAR), Hyderabad held onto its third place rank, while the Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur moved up to the sixth position, overtaking Symbiosis Law School, Pune.
A significant move was made by Gujarat National Law University, Gandhinagar (GNLU), which climbed three spots to secure the fifth place rank. Previously, GNLU was ranked eighth, making it one of the most improved law schools in the rankings.
West Bengal National University of Juridical Sciences (WBNUJS), Kolkata held onto its fourth place rank, demonstrating consistency in performance. Other notable mentions include Dr Ram Manohar Lohiya National Law University, Lucknow (RMLNLU) at the 21st position, National Law University and Judicial Academy, Assam (NLUJAA) at 35th, and National University of Study & Research in Law, Ranchi (NUSRL) at 30th.
The rankings this year saw a total of 267 law schools participating, with only 13 National Law Universities making it to the top 40. The parameters used in NIRF for the law school rankings include Teaching, Learning & Resources (TLR), Research and Professional Practices (RP), Graduation Outcomes (GO), Outreach and Inclusivity (OI), and Perception (PR).
The National Law University in Odisha was ranked at position 15, while the National Law Institute University, Bhopal was ranked 27th and Maharashtra National Law University, Nagpur (MNLU Nagpur) was ranked 28th. The rankings also included Aligarh Muslim University and Siksha 'O' Anushadhan, Bhubaneswar, but their exact ranks were not specified.
The announcement of the NIRF 2025 law school rankings was made by the Ministry of Education via its YouTube channel. The rankings serve as a benchmark for the progress and quality of legal education in India and provide valuable insights for students, parents, and academia.
