No germs detected in the city's drinking water supply of Chemnitz following thorough investigations.
In the heart of Saxony, the City of Chemnitz has recently faced a situation concerning the quality of its drinking water. The City of Chemnitz's Health and Prevention Office, along with the water suppliers Versorger eins, inetz, and Südsachsen Wasser, have been working diligently to ensure the safety of the city's water supply.
The concern arose due to the potential presence of the environmental bacterium Serratia fonticola. However, for more than two weeks, no trace of this bacterium has been detected in Chemnitz's drinking water network. This reassuring news has led to the announcement that the drinking water in Chemnitz is now fully consumable.
The rise in bacterial levels may have been due to higher temperatures and stagnation in parts of the water network, caused by low water consumption. To address this issue, the involved partners have undertaken extensive network inspections and disinfection measures. These measures, implemented by all parties, have proven effective in restoring the water's quality.
The Saxon State Office for Environment, Agriculture and Geology (Sächsisches Landesamt für Umwelt, Landwirtschaft und Geologie) is also closely monitoring the situation. The Health and Prevention Office, in addition to Versorger eins and Zweckverband Fernwasser Südsachsen, is examining water samples routinely. The supplier, Versorger eins, has conducted over 100 samples, while inetz, the remote water supplier, has tested around 850 samples. The Health and Prevention Office also contributes with additional samples each year.
The intensified monitoring is not confined to routine examinations. Beyond these, ongoing efforts are being made to ensure the drinking water remains within the limits set by the Drinking Water Ordinance. The water quality continues to be constantly monitored.
Coordination among all involved institutions is ongoing to maintain the achieved status. The partners are also exchanging information with other regional and national suppliers, scientific institutions, and other authorities. This collaborative approach ensures a comprehensive and effective response to the situation.
As the situation improves, disinfection measures are being gradually reduced. However, the commitment to maintaining the quality of Chemnitz's drinking water remains strong. Intensified monitoring and continued coordination among all involved institutions are ongoing to maintain the achieved status.
The City of Chemnitz can now breathe a sigh of relief as the drinking water is once again safe to consume. The diligent work of the Health and Prevention Office, water suppliers, and the Saxon State Office for Environment, Agriculture and Geology has paid off, ensuring the safety and well-being of the city's residents.
