North Korean leader Kim Jong-un has returned to his homeland following a rare foreign visit to China, where he met with Chinese President Xi Jinping and affirmed the strong ties between the two nations.
During the meeting at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing, Kim Jong-un stated that the relationship between China and North Korea "cannot change no matter how the international situation may change." He also expressed his admiration for China's transformation and development.
Xi Jinping echoed these sentiments, requesting increased coordination between the two countries to safeguard their common interests. The Chinese President expressed a sense of kinship, reflecting on his previous visit to North Korea.
Meanwhile, South Korea, Japan, and the US have commenced their annual "Freedom Edge" defensive drills, starting on Sept. 15. The exercise aims to upgrade aerial, naval, and cyberoperational capabilities against North Korea's nuclear and missile threats. However, the name of the leader overseeing the drills has not been publicly disclosed.
The drill will be conducted in compliance with international law and is designed to implement regional peace and stability. Kim Jong-un, during his visit to China, also expressed his support for China's sovereignty, territorial integrity, and development interests.
Kim Jong-un's visit to China was not his only diplomatic engagement. He also joined Russian President Vladimir Putin at a military parade commemorating the 80th anniversary of the end of World War II.
The Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) reported on the meeting between Kim and Xi, with Xi Jinping's comments regarding the stability of DPRK-China relations being echoed in the report. Kim Jong-un also affirmed the "friendly feelings" between North Korea and China and stated that the friendship between the two nations remains constant.
As the "Freedom Edge" exercise continues, the international community will watch closely to see how the relationships between the participating nations and North Korea develop.
