North Korea's missile launch attempt has allegedly failed, according to South Korea's reports.
South Korea and Japan have strongly condemned North Korea's latest missile launch on May 31, 2022, which reportedly involved a medium-range "Musudan" missile. The launch attempt was detected by South Korea's defense ministry, but the name of the previous spokesperson of the South Korean Ministry of Defense who made the statement that the launch had failed is not currently known.
The failed launch marks the fourth time this year that North Korea has attempted to launch a Musudan missile, a weapon first unveiled in 2010 that has never been successfully flight-tested. The estimated range of the Musudan is between 1,550 to 2,500 miles, with the lower range covering the whole of South Korea and Japan. The upper range would include US military bases on Guam.
Japan has described the launch as unacceptable and provocative, while Seoul has dismissed North Korea's overtures as insincere due to Kim Jong-Un's vow to push ahead with the country's nuclear weapons program. North Korea has claimed a series of technical breakthroughs in developing an intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) capable of delivering a nuclear warhead to targets across the continental United States.
However, outside experts have treated a number of North Korea's claims with skepticism, while acknowledging significant strides in upgrading its nuclear arsenal. North Korea has claimed miniaturizing a nuclear warhead to fit on a missile, developing a warhead that can withstand atmospheric re-entry, and building a solid-fuel missile engine. The latest missile launch on May 31, 2022, may have exploded on its mobile launcher, causing potential injuries to personnel in the immediate vicinity.
In a surprising turn of events, North Korean leader Kim Jong-Un offered military dialogue with South Korea during a ruling party congress to ease tensions. It remains to be seen whether this offer will lead to any meaningful dialogue or whether North Korea will continue its pursuit of nuclear weapons and missile technology in defiance of UN resolutions that ban any use of ballistic missile technology.
