Thomas More Football Opens Season with Tough Loss Against Southern Illinois
The 2025 season for Thomas More University football kicked off with a challenging game against Division I FCS program Southern Illinois, ranked No. 20 in the FCS preseason national poll. Despite a valiant effort, Thomas More fell to Southern Illinois with a score of 49-3.
The game, scheduled to take place on I-75, saw Griffin Scalf, a redshirt sophomore quarterback from Cincinnati Anderson, hit on 16 of 23 passes for 98 yards for Thomas More. Luke Iden from Taylor Mill added a 29-yard field goal to the scoreboard. Elijah Manning, from Louisville Male, led the Thomas More defense with 10 tackles (six solo).
Thomas More finds itself ranked No. 18 in the Kentucky Sports Report (KSR) Top 25 after Week 2, despite the loss. Notable schools in the top 25 include Louisville Trinity (10 first-place votes), Paducah Tilghman, Louisville St. Xavier, South Warren, Franklin County, Owensboro Catholic, Louisville Male, Louisville DuPont Manual, Corbin, Lexington Christian Academy, Scott County, Bowling Green, Woodford County, Belfry, Mayfield, Johnson Central, Frederick Douglass, and Bell County.
Interestingly, Frederick Douglass High School from Kentucky is listed in the KSR Top 20 football rankings despite having two losses at the start of the 2025 season. Covington Catholic is ranked No. 11 in Kentucky, despite being 0-2, and Cooper is ranked No. 18, also with two losses.
Highlands is ranked No. 7 in the state, while Ryle holds the No. 2 spot, just behind Louisville Trinity.
In other news, the KSR has also announced high school football rankings in Kentucky after Week 2. Season tickets for the Arena Football 1 League Kentucky Barrels are on sale, with the game schedule to be announced in September. Thomas More University football will also play a game at the University of Dayton Flyers.
Additionally, an 18th year baseball reunion and fundraiser for the Coach Ray Brown Scholarships will take place at Pelle's in Silver Grove on September 20, at 7 p.m. Attendees will vote on the all-time all-opponent team.
For reference, Southern Illinois is from the Missouri Valley Conference and will be playing Purdue from the Big Ten this week.
The event will also name the first-ever Newport Baseball Hall of Fame.
