New York City FC Appoints Doménec Torrent as Head Coach
New York City FC has announced the appointment of Doménec Torrent as their new head coach. The 55-year-old Spaniard, who has worked under Pep Guardiola for the last 11 years at Barcelona, Munich, and Man City, will take the touchlines at Yankee Stadium when NYCFC returns on June 24 against the defending MLS Cup champion Toronto FC.
Torrent's new position with NYCFC is pending the approval of his U.S. work permit. The statement from Torrent was released by the club, in which he expressed his ambition to manage a team again and is eager to experience and play a part in the soccer culture of New York City.
Torrent has a rich coaching history, having previously led Girona FC in the Spanish third division in 2005-06. He has also gained extensive experience as an assistant coach at FC Barcelona, Bayern Munich, and Manchester City under Pep Guardiola.
Torrent has won 24 combined trophies, including several league titles and cups, UEFA Champions League and Super Cup titles, and three FIFA Club World Cups. He wants to continue the attacking and possession style of soccer at New York City FC.
NYCFC sporting director Claudio Reyna expressed confidence in Torrent as both a person and a coach. The team is currently second in the East with a record of 8-3-4 through their first 15 matches. Torrent did not mention any specific plans or strategies for the upcoming matches in the club statement.
Torrent's first match as head coach of NYCFC will be against Toronto FC on June 24. No information was provided about any potential changes to the NYCFC roster or staff.
With the appointment of Doménec Torrent, NYCFC aims to continue their strong performance in the MLS and bring more trophies to the city.
