Barbara Gladstone's Chelsea Townhouse Sold for $13.1 Million

Barbara Gladstone's five-bedroom townhouse in Chelsea, a historic 19th-century brick Greek Revival rowhouse built in 1841, has been sold for $13.1 million. The sale price was more than $1 million above its asking price of $11.99 million.

The late art gallerist, who passed away last June in Paris, had acquired the property in 2011 for $6.3 million. The buyer of the townhouse, located at 344 W. 22nd St, remains unnamed.

The sale set a record per square foot for a Chelsea townhouse. The current 4,395 square foot iteration of the townhouse was designed by Annabell Selldorf, who added a balcony on each of the top three levels. The home features "gallery-like" Venetian plaster walls and white oak floors.

Barbara Gladstone was the founder of Gladstone Gallery, which has locations in New York, Brussels, Seoul, and Rome. The gallery represents a roster of celebrated artists, including Matthew Barney, Alex Katz, Joan Jonas, Wangechi Mutu, Keith Haring, Robert Rauschenberg, Carrie Mae Weems, Arthur Jafa, and many others.

In May, Sotheby's auctioned 12 pieces from Gladstone's collection, which sold for a total of $18.5 million with fees. The artists in the sale included Richard Prince, Andy Warhol, Rudolf Stingel, Mike Kelley, and Thomas Schütte.

Another home owned by Gladstone, a Gilded Age, turn-of-the-19th-century North Fork mansion, is currently on the market for $12 million.

Piet Oudolf, a renowned landscape designer, was responsible for the home's garden. The sale of the Chelsea townhouse closed on August 27 in an all-cash deal.
