Windsor-Essex Catholic District School Board Kicks Off 2025-2026 School Year with Record Enrollment
The Windsor-Essex Catholic District School Board (WECDSB) is preparing for the start of the 2025-2026 school year on Sept. 2, with a significant increase in enrollment numbers.
According to Emelda Byrne, Director of Education with the WECDSB, the board is expecting to have around 24,500 students this year, marking a growth not seen for a while. This figure includes nearly 15,000 elementary students and approximately 8,500 secondary students.
To accommodate this growth, the WECDSB has made improvements at several schools. St. John Vianney school, for instance, has added a portable for interior renovations and washroom upgrades. Assumption High School has seen the addition of six new portables to accommodate the increased number of students.
The high enrollment rate is not just limited to secondary schools. The high enrollment rate has not been seen in years for elementary schools as well, with St. Michael's Adult Catholic High School alone hosting 1,000 adults.
In addition to the physical expansion, the WECDSB is also offering new programs at the St. Anne's Skilled Trades Learning Centre in Tecumseh. For the 2025-2026 school year, new programs in masonry, construction, carpentry, electrical, plumbing, and welding will be introduced. However, there are no direct search results providing information on new programs at St. Anne's Skilled Trades Learning Centre compared to the previous year.
To cater to the growing student population, the WECDSB has also hired 39 full-time elementary teachers and 27 full-time secondary teachers to help deliver quality education.
Moreover, the WECDSB is expanding the former Queen of Peace site in Leamington to offer hairstyling and aesthetics starting in the second semester.
With these changes and improvements, the WECDSB is ready to welcome students back for another year of learning and growth. Director Byrne expressed her excitement about this year's enrollment numbers, stating that she is looking forward to another successful school year.
