Obstacles in Transitioning to Cloud Services
In today's fast-paced digital world, the computing landscape is undergoing a significant transformation. The shift towards cloud-based solutions for data storage is becoming increasingly prevalent, with companies like Amazon, Google, and Microsoft leading the charge.
One of the key players in this transition is Amazon Web Services (AWS), currently a $7 billion business and expected to reach a staggering $50 billion within the next four years. Companies such as Netflix, Airbnb, and Tinder have already made the switch from their own servers to AWS, recognising the benefits it offers.
However, this move to the cloud is not without its challenges. For transactional data that changes frequently, there is a risk that the data copied may be stale by the time it is accessed. Logistical issues regarding real-time data access are also a concern.
To address these challenges, companies like WANdisco are involved in the process of cloud migration. David Richards, co-founder and CEO of WANdisco, suggests that the key to a seamless cloud migration process is ensuring easy and secure data transfer.
The data industry is experiencing consolidation and innovation, with established vendors partnering with younger firms or developing cloud services internally. Dell and EMC, for instance, have merged in the biggest acquisition in tech history.
The expertise and experience that established vendors bring to the table will eventually become mainstream in the cloud services industry. This is evident in the growing adoption of cloud applications, with nine out of ten organizations currently using at least one cloud application. More than two thirds of enterprises are now using databases in the cloud.
The advantages of cloud-based solutions are clear. They are far cheaper than traditional storage options and can be scaled affordably. As a result, business spending on hardware is expected to drop by 13.6% in 2017 due to cloud migration.
In the world where round-the-clock access to data is becoming increasingly necessary, a better solution for real-time transactional data is needed. The cloud, with its ability to provide instant access and scalability, offers a promising solution.
The collaboration between companies like Microsoft and WANdisco is a testament to this shift. Microsoft is working with WANdisco to promote the development of cloud migration processes, recognising the importance of seamless data transfer in the cloud era.
Until the value of combining old and new is recognised, the cloud migration process will remain challenging. However, with the right tools and partnerships, the transition to cloud-based solutions is set to revolutionise the data industry.
