Obtaining Permanent Residency in Greece through a Digital Nomad Visa is Possible?
Greece has opened its doors to remote workers from around the world with its digital nomad visa, a unique opportunity for those looking to relocate to Europe. Launched in 2021, this visa welcomes remote workers and their immediate families to live and work in the country for up to two years.
To be eligible, applicants must have a valid passport, meet the minimum income requirement, work remotely, have a clean criminal record, hold international health insurance, obtain a medical certificate, and provide the address of their accommodations in Greece.
Once in Greece, remote workers can apply for a temporary residence permit before their digital nomad visa expires, if they decide to stay for more than one year. This permit is renewable for two years, and with continuous residency for five consecutive years, remote workers can apply for permanent residency in Greece.
The pathway to permanent residency requires meeting additional criteria. Remote workers must legally reside continuously in Greece for five years, maintain a valid residence permit during this time, demonstrate stable and sufficient income, comply with Greek immigration laws, and meet the minimum stay requirement. The minimum stay requirement states that remote workers may not leave Greece for more than a total of ten months during the five-year period they lived there as a temporary resident.
After 12 years of living in Greece, remote workers may apply for citizenship through naturalization, but this process involves passing Greek language and civics exams. It is not a requirement to know the Greek language to get permanent residency in Greece, but it may be necessary if applying for citizenship.
Greece offers a favorable tax incentive for foreigners living in the country. Owed taxes are deducted by 50% for the first seven years of living there. To retain your tax residency status, you must stay in Greece for at least 183 days out of the year.
Remote workers can include their spouses and dependent children on their visa applications, making it an attractive option for families seeking a change of scenery. The Greece digital nomad visa is not only a chance to work from a beautiful Mediterranean destination, but it also offers a pathway to permanent residency and potential citizenship for those who meet the criteria.
