Offshore Poland, Dutch company Boskalis initiates Baltica 2 boulder removal operations
Baltica 2 Offshore Wind Farm Construction Begins in Polish Waters
The Baltica 2 offshore wind farm, a significant renewable energy project, has taken a significant step forward as construction works have commenced in Polish waters. The project, comprising 107 Siemens Gamesa 14 MW-222 turbines, is set to generate 1.5 GW of clean energy once completed.
The Dutch company Boskalis has been awarded a contract for the transportation and installation of export and inter-array cables for the wind farm, as well as the levelling of the seabed, pre-trenching, and the removal of boulders. These works are essential to prepare the seabed for the planned laying and burial of approximately 300 kilometres of export cables and about 170 kilometres of inter-array cables in 2026.
In addition to the cable works, Boskalis will also use the BOKA Falcon vessel, equipped with two ploughs, T-Rex and Megalodon, for the seabed preparation. T-Rex will remove dozens of large boulders from the Baltica 2 offshore wind farm area, while Megalodon will excavate a trench for the subsequent installation of the cables.
The developers, PGE and Ørsted, took the final investment decision (FID) on the project at the beginning of this year. In July 2025, the vessel Olympic Electra began relocating boulders at the Baltica 2 offshore wind farm site. NKT, a Danish cable manufacturer, is responsible for the installation and burial of the cables in 2026.
The wind turbine manufacturer will use the Port of Gdansk for the storage, pre-assembly, and offshore installation of the turbines. This strategic location will facilitate the efficient execution of the project, contributing to its timely completion.
The Baltica 2 offshore wind farm represents a significant investment in Poland's renewable energy sector and underscores the country's commitment to a sustainable future. As construction progresses, it is expected to create numerous job opportunities and stimulate local economic growth. The offshore works at the Baltica 2 project site are another step towards a greener, more sustainable future for Poland and the region.
