Ohio's $130M Powerball Winner Misses Out as Prize Expires
A Powerball ticket worth $130 million, purchased in Ohio in July 2024, has expired unclaimed. The winner, whose identity remains unknown, missed out on the substantial prize. This follows another unclaimed jackpot in California, where a $395 million Mega Millions prize went unclaimed, with only half collected.
The winning Powerball ticket was bought on July 3, 2024, at a Walmart Supercenter in Huber Heights. It matched all five numbers and the Powerball number, but the winner failed to come forward before the deadline. If claimed, the winner would have received $65.8 million after taxes in a single payment. However, the remaining $197 million has now expired, leaving the lottery to support Ohio's education instead, after a $1.9 million cut.
The unclaimed funds from the California Mega Millions jackpot also contributed to education, with one winner already receiving half of the $395 million prize. The other half went unclaimed, leading to a lawsuit by the winner of the first half.
The expiration of the $130 million Powerball prize in Ohio serves as a reminder for lottery players to check their tickets promptly. Unclaimed prizes fund important initiatives like education, but the winner misses out on a life-changing sum. With no information on the identity of the Ohio Powerball winner, the prize money has been forfeited.
