Oklahoma State quarterback Hauss Hejny sidelined due to fractured foot
The Oklahoma State Cowboys' season-opener saw a promising debut from redshirt freshman transfer quarterback Hauss Hejny, but his performance was cut short by an unfortunate injury.
Hejny, a transfer from TCU, showcased his skills early on, leading the team through the first three offensive series. In these series, he completed 5 passes out of 10 for 96 yards and threw a 10-yard touchdown pass to Gavin Freeman. He also demonstrated his running abilities, rushing the ball 4 times for a total of 27 yards, including a 6-yard touchdown.
However, during the game, Hejny suffered a broken bone in his left foot. The extent of the injury is expected to keep him out for a significant amount of time, leaving the Cowboys in a tough spot as they prepare for their upcoming game against No. 7 Oregon on Sept. 6.
With Hejny sidelined, Zane Flores stepped up as the starting quarterback. Flores, a redshirt freshman in his third year at Oklahoma State, returned to action after missing the 2023 season due to a foot injury. He completed 13 passes out of 20 for 136 yards, but also experienced some struggles, rushing the ball three times for a net loss of 8 yards.
The backup quarterback for the Cowboys in the event of Hejny's continued absence is yet to be determined, as coach Mike Gundy is waiting for more information before making a decision. Gundy has remained tight-lipped about Hejny's injury, stating that he is still gathering details and will provide an update when appropriate.
Despite the setback, the Cowboys are determined to face the challenge posed by the top-ranked Oregon Ducks. The team will undoubtedly draw on their resilience and team spirit as they prepare for the highly anticipated matchup.
